NZ TEAMS OF TO TASMAINI - 11 February 2007

CD-Rods New Zealand Silver Flies Off to Tasmania to defend Title

Tomorrow two New Zealand Fly Fishing teams fly out to Tasmania to compete for the Oceania championships, NZ won the gold medal last time the event was held in 2005 at Rotorua.

This is an event run alternately in Australia and New Zealand with two teams from each competing, this year there will also be teams from Canada and the USA attending so it will be a tough comp but the main aim is to beat the Aussies and take home the gold .

The event is held over 3 days with 5 x 3 hour sessions, 3 will be fishing from drifting boats on lakes and 2 will be river sessions, fishing is catch and release for both brown & rainbow trout. There is a week’s practise before the competition starts to get used to the local conditions and work out what flies will work where.

The venues are going to be,

*Derwent River:*
A large river up to 50m wide, controlled by Hydro Tasmania with a largely variable water flow. Hydro Tasmania will lower the level for competition days and for practice on one day during official practice. The river level varies greatly at other times. Both Browns and Rainbows to be caught, size can vary and some good fish frequent the river.

*Tyenna River:*
A small river with a large head of brown trout, there are a couple of fish farms on the river and rainbows do appear in the catch at various times. Every now and then a monster fish (for the size of the river) appear and below is a photo of one taken on a bait recently.

*Dee Lagoon: *
Challenging Lake managed as a Rainbow fishery, but also with a good head of browns. It is surrounded by Eucalypt forests and has very clear water.

*Bronte Lagoon: *
A brown trout fishery which again holds a good number of rainbows. Numerous weedbeds and bays exist, there is a dun hatch here. The lake is predominantly shallow, Less than 20ft and has the highest catch rate for local competitions.

*Little Pine Lagoon: *
The highest altitude lake which is on the Central Plateau near Miena. Little Pine is a Brown Trout fishery only and the fish average b/w 2 3/4 lb & 3 1/2 lb. The lagoon is shallow, mainly under 8ft deep, and can be discoloured if heavy winds blow for a few days prior to fishing, however this does not have a detrimental effect on the fishing.

This will be the last international competition for the team before the World Champs here in NZ in March 2008
